English: variant of Dellar a habitational name for a ‘dweller in the dell’ from an agent derivative of Middle English del(l) (see Dell ). German: from a short form of a personal name formed with an element cognate with Old English deal ‘proud famous’. Alternatively a variant of Delle . French (mainly southwestern): unexplained. This surname which is also found in Haiti is very rare in France.
