German: variant of Gille German: habitational name for someone from Gill near Neuss in the Rhineland. Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from the Yiddish male personal name Hiller a variant of Hillel. The initial g is due to Russian influence since Russian has no h and alters it to g in borrowed words and names.
