The East Yorkshire placename derives from Old English hēafod ‘head top headland’ later replaced by Old Norse hǫfuth ‘head headland’ + Old English denu ‘valley’. Many of the other placenames derive from Old English hol ‘hole hollow’ + denu. Americanized form of Norwegian Hovden .
