Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Kranjec Kranjc and Krajnc and possibly also of Croatian Kranjec: habitational name for someone from the former Duchy of Carniola (Slovenian Kranjska) in present-day Slovenia (see Krantz ). Jewish (Ashkenazic): artificial name from German Kranz or Yiddish krants ‘wreath garland’.
