Irish (Galways and Limerick): from Ó Neachtain ‘descendant of Neachtan’ a personal name which may derive from the word necht meaning ‘clean pure’. Irish and Scottish: shortened form of McNaughton from Mac Neachtain. Scottish: from Naughton in Fife which is recorded as Hadnachten in the 12th century and Athnathan in the 13th century. The placename derives from Scottish Gaelic áth ‘ford’ + the personal name Nechtan.
