Palling Family History
Palling Name Meaning
in most cases probably a modern spelling of Paulin with -ing substituted for -in. from Palling (Norfolk) which is recorded as Pallinga in 1086 and Paullinges in 1224 and probably means ‘Pælli's people’ from the Old English personal name Pælli + the group-name suffix -ingas. Post-medieval examples of this name in Norfolk may have been confused with (1). perhaps from an unrecorded Middle English personal name *Palling (a pet form of Old English Pælli or *Pælla + Old English -ing). Development to modern Pallin and Pallen is to be expected but these could belong to either of the other senses.
