Indian (Maharashtra; pronounced as two syllables): Konkanastha Brahmin name from Sanskrit dātā ‘donor’. Japanese (pronounced as two syllables): written phonetically 伊達 ‘that’ and ‘arrive’. It is a habitational name from a place called Idate in Mutsu (now Aomori) prefecture borne by a samurai family descended from the northern Fujiwara clan. English: perhaps a nickname from Middle English date ‘date (the fruit of the date palm tree)’ but the application of this is unclear.
