English: from Middle English dreng dring threng thring ‘free tenant’ (especially one holding land partly by military partly by other service) also ‘man warrior retainer vassal’. The word was borrowed into Old English from Old Norse drengr ‘young man’. The name may also be derived from the early Middle English personal name Dreng Dring (Old Norse Drengr with the same meaning as above).
