English (West Midlands): habitational name from any of various places called Egerton in Cheshire and Kent Egerton in Wheathill (Shropshire) Egerton in Bolton le Moors (Lancashire) Egerton in Scammonden (Yorkshire) or Edgerton in Huddersfield (Yorkshire). Egerton in Kent is from the Old English personal name Ecgheard + Old English tūn ‘estate farmstead’ (see Eckert ) but Egerton in Chesire is more likely to derive from the Old English personal name Ecghere (in which the second element is Old English here ‘army’) + Old English tūn.
