Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Coinín ‘son of Coinín’ a byname based on a diminutive of cano ‘wolf’ also Anglicized as Canning and Cunneen . The similarity to the borrowed word coinín ‘coney rabbit’ has sometimes caused this name to be Anglicized as Rabbitt . Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Fhinghin ‘son of Finghen’ a personal name meaning ‘fair-born’.
