Altered form of Dutch Van Ostrande which is most likely a variant of Van Nostrand formed by misdivision of the preposition van ‘from of’ and the placename. The surname (Van) Ostrande is not found in the Netherlands. Swedish: probably of the same etymology as Ostrand the addition of the suffix -er giving the appearance of a name formed with the suffix -ander derived from Greek anēr (genitive andros) ‘man’. This surname is very rare in Sweden. In some cases reportedly also a shortened and altered form of Swedish Sjöstrand (see Sjostrand ).
