Scottish and English (of Norman origin): probably a nickname for an unusually small man from Anglo-Norman French petit ‘little small’ + creu ‘growth’. This surname is also established in Ireland having been taken there first by Scottish settlers and then also by Huguenots who settled in County Tyrone in the 17th century.
