The Cheshire placename derives from an Old English personal name Pofa + connective -ing- + tūn. The Shrops and Dorset placenames derive from the Old English personal name Pēofa + connective -ing- + tūn or from the genitive form of the personal name Pēofan + tūn. alternatively it may be from Pointhorne in Croxden (Staffordshire) perhaps a compound of Middle English point ‘spike’ and thorn ‘thorn tree’. The placename is recorded as Pointon in 1775.
