Quan Family History

Irish (Waterford): shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Cúáin ‘descendant of Cúán’ (see Coyne ). Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 全 meaning ‘complete’ in Chinese: adopted in place of the homophonous Chinese surname 泉 which was from the first element of Quan Fu (泉府) the name of an official post during the Western Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BC) responsible for the economy and trade. Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 權 denoting ‘counterpoise’ or ‘power might’ in ancient Chinese: (i) from Quan (權) the name of a state (located in Dangyang in Hubei province) that was granted to a descendant of the king Wu Ding (died 1192 BC) during the Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BC). After it was annexed by the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period (770–476 BC) the name of the state was adopted as a surname. (ii) from the placename Quan (權) a fief (located in Dangyang in Hubei province) in the state of Chu which was originally the state of Quan (權). King Wu of Chu (ruler of the state of Chu died 690 BC) appointed Dou Min a noble from the state of Chu as governor of the fief Quan (權) and some of Dou Min's descendants adopted Quan (權) as their surname.
