Stobo Family History
Stobo Name Meaning
from Stobo (Peebless). The first element of the place-name is Old English stubb *stobb ‘a stub a tree-stump’ a word which also gives Scots stobb ‘stake post’. The second element is probably Old English hōh ‘heel; projecting ridge of land’ whence Scots heuch or heugh ‘precipice crag cliff a steep hill’. However the earliest recorded form of the place-name is problematic and it may have been influenced by the common Brittonic place-name suffix *-āk-.
