Tooke Family History

Tooke Name Meaning

English (Norfolk and Suffolk): from the Middle English personal name Toky Toke Tuke Tuk(ke) (Old Danish Tōki Tūki Tukk(a)). This was probably a pet form of Old Norse Thorkell (Old Danish Thurkell; see Turkel ) and perhaps of other names in Thor- or Thur- with the Old Norse hypocoristic suffix -ki. An additional source of Tōki may have been a nickname Old Norse tóki ‘simpleton’. It was popular in Scandinavia partly perhaps because it was that of a master archer in the Icelandic Jómsvíkinga saga.
