West Frisian: patronymic meaning ‘(belonging to) Albert and his kin’ and subsequently also a habitational name for someone from the castle of Alberda or an estate or farm called Alberdaheerd in 't Zandt Groningen. This is the name of nobility in the Groninger Ommelanden region dating from the 15th century. In 1811 however in the province of Friesland the cognate patronymic Alberts became the surname Alberda officially in several families.
