Brendlinger Name Meaning

Probably an Americanized form of German Brändlinger: topographic name for someone who lived near a burned area of a forest or town (see Brandt ). Since fire was a great threat in the Middle Ages this name may also have been a derisive nickname for a presumed arsonist in which case the suffix -linger is to be understood as an intensifying agent suffix. The surname Brändlinger is no longer found in Germany. Compare Brentlinger .
