English: perhaps a nickname for a gentle or inoffensive person from Middle English cade ‘young animal left by its mother and brought up by hand as a domestic pet’. In southern England cad is found in dialects meaning ‘youngest and smallest of a family of any kind’. French (also Cadé): topographic name from cade ‘juniper’ (from Latin catanus).
