French: metonymic occupational name for a cartwright or carter from the dialect word carre ‘cart wagon’ (see 3 below). English: from Middle English carre ‘cart wagon chariot sled’ (Anglo-Norman French Old French char ‘cart’ from Latin carrus) used to denote a carrier or a cartwright. English: sometimes a variant of Carr in northern and eastern (Scandinavian-influenced) counties. Catalan (Carré): topographic name from a variant of carrer ‘street’.
