Americanized form of Czech and Slovak Černý Slovak also Čierny (see Cerny ) and probably also of Slovenian Černi (see Cerni ) all meaning ‘black dark’ (see also 2 below). Ukrainian: nickname based on the Russian adjective chërnyy ‘black dark’ denoting a black-haired or dark-skinned man. Americanized form of Slovak and Slovenian Černej (see Cerney ). Americanized form of Hungarian Cserney: habitational name for someone from a place called Cserne in the former Trencsény County now in Slovakia or from Csernye in Veszprém County.
