In both cases it is (ultimately) from the Latin name Christus ‘Christ’ which is from Greek Christos a derivative of chriein ‘to anoint’ a calque of Hebrew mashiaḥ ‘Messiah’ which likewise means literally ‘the anointed’. This is the title given to Jesus of Nazareth (see Jesus ) as embodying the fulfilment of Messianic prophecy and expectation; he is the central figure of Christianity and most Christians believe he is the incarnation of God the Son.
