English (Norman or Huguenot origin) or French: habitational name with fused preposition d(e) principally for someone from Arras in northern France or possibly from Arras-en-Lavedan (Hautes-Pyrénées) or Arras-sur-Rhône (Ardèche). The name was first brought to Britain by the Normans and from the 16th century reintroduced by Protestant refugees from France.
