De%20geus Name Meaning
Dutch: nickname with the addition of the definite article de ‘the’ from geus (from French gueux) a word for a beggar or vagabond which during the Eighty Years’ War against Spain denoted a member of a group of Dutch rebels (the Watergeuzen). The surname was probably given to a member of this group or as a metaphoric nickname to someone behaving like one.
