East German (of Slavic origin): topographic name from Polish or other Slavic gora ‘mountain’ or from the root gor- (ultimately from Old Slavic gorěti) ‘to burn’ (denoting cleared forest) elements contained in various field names and placenames. Germanized form of Sorbian Gór: from a Lower Sorbian short form of the personal name Gorisław (from an Old Slavic name based on gorěti ‘to burn’) or Grogor (see Gregory ).
