English: northern or occasional form of Hale or a habitational name from a place called with Old English halh ‘nook hollow’ such as Haile (Cumberland) or the frequent Hale (for example in Cheshire Hampshire Kent and Lincolnshire). English and Scottish: variant of Hail . Ethiopian and Eritrean: from the personal name Haile which is interpreted as ‘my power’ in the Ge’ez Amharic or related languages. It often forms part of a Christian name such as Hailemariam and in this case it translates as ‘power of’. Compare Hayle — Note: Since Ethiopians and Eritreans do not have hereditary surnames this name was registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
