Germanized form of Sorbian Hulk or Hulka: topographic name or a metonymic occupational name from a diminutive of Lower Sorbian hul ‘beehive’. Possibly also a Germanized form of Czech Hůlka (see Hulka ). English: variant of extinct Hulk which may either be a nickname meaning ‘very big man’ or a topographic name from Middle English hulk ‘shed’. This surname is very rare in Britain.
