The Telugu form of the word is ayyagāru meaning ‘father sir’. The Tamil word ayyan consists of the noun stem ayya + the masculine singular suffix -n. The Iyengar Brahmins are a prominent community from Tamil Nadu; they are votaries of the god Vishnu.
