German: from Middle High German lette ‘clay clayey soil’ hence a topographic name for someone who farmed on fertile clay soil. Chinese: possibly from Cantonese form of the Chinese name 力 (meaning ‘power strength’) a monosyllabic personal name or part of a disyllabic personal name of some early Chinese immigrants in the US.
