Americanized form of North German Luckmann: topographic name from the dialect term luke ‘hollow hole’. In some cases possibly also Dutch: from a derivative of the personal name Luc (see Lucas ). The surname Luckman is very rare in the Netherlands. Probably also an Americanized form of Slovenian and Croatian Lukman: from an old vernacular form formed with the suffix -man ‘man’ of German origin of the personal name Luka (see Lucas ).
