Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Giolla Earnáin ‘son of the servant (i.e. devotee) of (Saint) Earnán’ a personal name borne by several saints in the north of Ireland. Earnán was early interpreted as ferreolus ‘little iron one’ (based on Gaelic iarn ‘iron’) although this may not be correct. Compare McLarney .
