Irish: possibly of Scottish origin an Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Clochaire ‘son of the stonemason’. Sometimes by misinterpretation of clochaire as cloch an rí ‘stone of the king’ the name was ‘translated’ in Ireland as Kingston . A Scottish Gaelic version Mac Clachair was Anglicized as McClacher and shortened to Clacher.
