German: variant of Mühlich (via the form Miehlich) an unflattering nickname from Middle High German müelich ‘troublesome difficult to get on with’. Polish Czech and Sorbian: nickname derived from miły (Polish and Sorbian) milý (Czech) ‘gentle dear; pleasant’. As a Polish and Sorbian surname it may also be from a pet form of a personal name containing the Slavic element mil ‘gentle dear’.
