Spanish and Portuguese: from the personal name Nolasco derived from the name of a Christian saint Saint Peter Nolasco (Petrus Nolascus in Latin Pedro Nolasco in Spanish) who died in Barcelona in 1256 where he was co-founder and leader of the order of S. Maria della Mercede ‘Our Lady of Ransom’ known in English as the Mercedarians. Italian: habitational name for someone from Noli in Savona province Liguria from an adjectival form of the placename. Italian: possibly in some instances from the personal name Nolasco (see 1 above).
