English (Welsh Borders) and Scottish (southeastScotland): variant of Oven with post-medieval excrescent -s itself a topographic name from Middle English atte(n) ovene ‘(dweller) at the oven (or furnace)’. The ‘oven’ in question was probably a furnace for making charcoal or for smelting iron. North Frisian and East Frisian: patronymic from the Frisian personal name Ove Uwe.
