Greek: patronymic meaning ‘son of the priest’ from papas ‘priest’ + the ending -poulos (from Latin pullus ‘nestling chick’) which occurs chiefly in the Peloponnese. Greek Orthodox priests unlike their Roman Catholic counterparts were allowed to marry and have children. This is the commonest surname in Greece.
