English (southern): topographic name for someone living by an inlet of the sea a derivative of Old English pyll ‘inlet’ (see Pill ) + the -er suffix denoting an inhabitant. Cornish: habitational name from Pellor in Breage (Cornwall). The meaning of the placename is unknown.
