German:: habitational name for someone from a place called Petschau (Czech name: Bečov) near Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) in Western Bohemia. topographic or habitational name derived from Slovenian peč ‘rugged rock’ or from any of its derivatives (e.g. the placename Peče in Carinthia) and also used as a translation of the Slovenian equivalents Pečovnik Pečevnik. It is an Austrian surname originating mostly from the (bilingual) Austrian parts of Carinthia and Styria and a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ).
