Italian: from the dialect term sita ‘arrow shaft; plowshare’ presumably used for a maker or user of such items. Alternatively it may be related to the term sitare ‘exude a bad smell’. Italian (southern): from Greek sēta ‘sieve’ probably applied to a sieve maker. Americanized form of Hungarian Szita .
