Russian Belorussian Bulgarian Macedonian and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): patronymic from the Slavic word sokol ‘falcon’ used as a nickname or as a personal name (see Sokol ). It is formed with the Slavic possessive suffix -ov. In some cases the Russian surname represents an artificial name assigned to pupils in ecclesiastical schools.
