Japanese: written 園田 ‘garden rice paddy’. It is found mostly in the island of Kyūshū where bearers are descended from the Kikuchi family. A priestly family of Ise (now part of Mie prefecture) is descended from Fujiwara no Hidesato (10th century) of the northern Fujiwara through the Arakida family; they take their name from a village in Kōzuke (now Gunma prefecture).
