Spanish (Tarín): habitational name from a place called Tarín in Teruel. French: from tarin ‘siskin’ (a small songbird similar to the goldfinch) hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble the bird in some way (e.g. for someone who liked to sing) or perhaps a metonymic occupational name for a bird dealer or catcher. French: possibly also a metonymic occupational name for a moneyer from tarin a medieval coin from Late Latin tarinus probably a derivative of Tarentum (see Taranto ) where the coins were first minted.
