English: occasionally perhaps from the Anglo-Norman French and Middle English personal name Tiard Tiart with the loss of final -d or -t. It is an Old French form of ancient Germanic Theudhard Latinized as Thiardus and is composed of theud ‘people’ + hard- ‘hardy brave’. Scottish and Irish: variant of Tier
