Hungarian: nickname for someone with red hair or a ruddy complexion from veres an old form of vörös ‘red’. The surname Veres of Hungarian origin is also common in Romania where it is also spelled Vereş; it is also found in Slovakia (see also 2 below). Slovak Serbian Rusyn (from Vojvodina in Serbia) Croatian and Slovenian (Vereš): from a Slavicized form of the Hungarian vocabulary word vörös ‘red’ or of the surnames Veres (see 1 above) and Vörös (see Voros ).
