English (Northumberland and Durham): perhaps a nickname from Middle English wonders wondres ‘marvellous wondrous’ a derivative of wonder ‘marvel unusual event’ (Old English wundor) or alternatively possibly a variant of Scottish Wanders which Black tentatively derives from a Scottish local pronunciation of Guinevere the name of King Arthur's queen who according to local Angus legend was buried in the parish of Alyth.
