Woodington Family History

Woodington Name Meaning

English (Gloucestershire): habitational name possibly from Wotton in Folkington (Sussex) but no early bearers from the county can be found and so the surname may be from a lost place which is similarly named. The placename derives from Old English wudu ‘wood’ + connective -ing- + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. There are also places called Woodington in Devon and Hampshire the former of which is probably named from the Old English personal name Odda (with genitive -n) + Old English tūn.
