It is not likely that you are related to Samuel. "Champlain" was an alias as he was born "Complain", so the only way you could be related to him (using your in-common last name as reason to think you might be related) would be through Samuel's children.

Samuel married a 12 year old girl, Helene Boulle when he was in his 50's They never consumated their marriage and she never had any children - in fact, she became a nun, founded an order of nuns and became a Mother Superior. In France in those days, you could marry a girl of 12 but couldn't co-habit until they were 14. Samuel left for the new world before Helene was 14.

Unless he had illegitimate children in Canada who could prove their relationship to him, you are not related.

It is very common in the Champlin family for people to believe they are actually Champlains and descended from Samuel. Some go as far as to legally change the spelling of their surname to make it so!

I say this because most of the Champlains in the USA are actually descended from Jeffrey Champlin who settled in Rhode Island in the mid 1630's.

If you live in the US and are interested in trying to see if you are a descendant of Jeffrey's, let me know. I have lots of data on this family.
