Sister Mary Pius Regnier, 91, died at 2:26 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The former Helen Marie Regnier was born in Aurora, Ill., on April 28, 1914, to Fred A. Regnier and Anna McDonnell Regnier.
Survivors include one sister, Jeanette Regnier of Oswego, Ill., one brother, J. Donald Regnier of Aurora; and some nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Regnier, James Regnier and the Rev. William Regnier.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 23, 1932, professed first vows Aug. 15, 1934, and final vows Jan. 23, 1940. She was an educator in elementary and secondary schools and in administration. She taught in school staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana and Illinois. Of the 73 years as a Sister of Providence 25 years were spent teaching. During 1960 to 1976, while she was in the Generalate Administration, she served six years as council member and 10 years as general superior. In the Diocese of Joliet, she served 15 years in the Marriage Tribunal. At St. Mary-of-the-Woods in 1993, she ministered in health care services, followed in 2002 with her ministry of prayer.
She received her bachelor's degree in English from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, and her master's degree in education from St. Louis University.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus officiating. Burial is in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Wake is 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a wake service in the church. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements
