SCHERER

Oscar Henry Scherer, longtime Goldendale resident, died at Klickitat Valley Hospital May 29 after a protracted illness. He was 83. Mr. Scherer was born in Center, N.D., Oct. 11, 1906, to William and Ida Scherer. After his father’s death, he moved to Portland, Ore., in 1919 with his mother and family. He married Mammie Jones in 1928 and they moved to Goldendale with their son Donald in 1938.

Mr. Scherer held numerous jobs in the area, including sheep ranching and working at the creamery. He was also employed as a plumber and carpenter and worked for
Gillenwater’s Hardware. He later worked as a custodian for the Goldendale Schools until his retirement in 1974, when he was able to devote more time to outdoor pursuits of fishing and camping with his second wife, Louise, whom he married in 1952.

He was gifted at creating things with his hands; he enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards with his friends and following high school sports.

Mr. Scherer is survived by a sister, Fern Jones of Tumalo, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Hattie Stewart of Goldendale; a stepson, Virgil Emery, of Prineville, Ore.; three children, Terri Hansen, Laurie PreJean, and Mark Emery; a daughter-in-law, Nondis Scherer, and her sons Tim and Terrence Scherer of Goldendale.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl, in 1950; his first wife, Mammie, in 1980; a sister, Dolly, in 1986; his second wife, Louise, in 1986; and a son, Don, in 1989.
