I am looking for information on family that are originally from the villiage of Solowie in the Ukraine. Sameul Cemeh Waskowic(1906-1987) and his wife Mary Reimer (1919-1981) and his brother Kostantin Waskowic (1900-1974) and his wife Annie Hiliuk (1912-2000) and there families immigrated to Canada at the same time. The iformation I have lists Solowie Datan Kowel Volyn Ukraine as their place of origin but as I don't know and Ukrainian I'm not sure what this means. Any help would be welcome.

Dependant on the documentations originality, but we can conclude that Solowie / Solovi is the village that your ancesters were from, from the district of Datan / Datyn which is some 20 miles North of the city of Kowel / Kovel ... which in turn is some 259 miles West of Kiev, in present / past Oblast / Province of Volyn.

Solowij (coordinates 51.26-24.47) and Datyn (coordinates 51.31-24.46) are two villages, that although only 9 kilometers/6 miles apart from one another, are in two different districts of the Vohlynska Oblast/Region. The Turyn River runs right pass both places. Solowij is in the STAROVYZHIVSKIJ raion/district and Datyn is in the RATNIVSKIJ Raion.

From late 18th century to 1919, this region was called Vohlynskaya Gubernia and belonged to Russia. Note that the Turyn River flows right pass Kovel as well. Your ancestral villages do not show up on this map, but it is an interesting map to look at.
Notes on Guberniya District Maps

Appx 1919-1939 this region fell under Polish domain. Technically Mary was born in Poland, while the others were born in Czarist Russia. The key to archival research will be ethnicity and religion.

<Ms. West, who grew up in Edmonton and Calgary, traveled to Ukraine in order to research the costumes, as well as the history and culture of the various Ukrainian dances the group performs.

Her family, the Waschuks, originally emigrated from Datyn, northwest of Kovel in Volyn, western Ukraine, in the early 1900s.>
